The Challenge

The client, a prominent international law firm listed in Am Law 50 and Fortune 100, has 17 US, Asia, and Europe offices. It represents the world’s largest financial institutions and leading technology and life sciences companies.

Their challenge was to undertake the human translation of 1.5 million words of e-discovery content from German into English, all within three weeks. The content was part of a second request from the FTC relating to a pending international acquisition. The e-discovery content was stored on the Relativity® platform and managed by a global e-discovery solutions provider.

However, the scope changed mid-process, and the firm had to translate 7.5 million words from German into English in less than two months.

The Solution

To meet the required deadline, Welocalize broke the project into two phases:

Phase One: Translating 1.6 million words of priority content, including emails and correspondence.

Phase Two: Translating 5.9 million words of priority content, including emails, correspondence, financial, patent, and IP information.

Upon establishing the strategy and process, Welocalize assembled a team of seasoned legal translators to work on both phases.

By combining human expertise and machine translation, they managed the client’s high-volume priority content within the deadline. The team also closely coordinated with the e-discovery provider for document exchanges and delivery to the client.

The Results

Despite a five-fold increase in the initial word count, Welocalize successfully delivered the translations within the three-week and five-week deadlines, enabling the client to meet the FTC’s stringent deadlines regarding their upcoming international acquisition.

“The Welocalize team is outstanding, providing world-class language solutions under tight deadlines. As an e-discovery provider, managing multilingual data can be a challenge, but Welocalize made the process easy and delivered exceptional services. By far the best experience I’ve had with a legal translation provider.”
