Welocalize: Celebrating 25 Years of Boldness, Curiosity, and Authenticity
2022 was a particularly special year for us here at Welocalize, as we celebrated our 25th anniversary. While we’re in a new world very different from 1997, we’ve been able to grow, innovate, and transform the company into what it is today.
This year, we have challenged ourselves to keep being bold, curious, and authentic, and we believe the work we have produced this year shows we are challenging ourselves to keep doing just that.
A new Era for Welocalize…
To mark our 25th anniversary, we released some memories and the first look of our new brand in a video. We are so excited to see where Welocalize is heading, and there will be more to come in 2023. Take a look:
And to pay homage to this momentous year, for all of us at Welocalize, let’s take a look back at some of our highlights for 2022.
1. Smith & Multilingual Media
Our 25th anniversary is not just an important milestone for us. Our anniversary has also been recognized by the wider localization community.
And to honor this milestone, Multilingual Media invited Smith Yewell, Welocalize CEO to join them for a candid and in-depth interview.
He shared the core philosophies that Welocalize is founded upon, how the company made the transition into a technology company, and the personal reasons that inspired him to kickstart Welolcalize.
As Smith says:
“Welocalize is a love story… I met Julia in an Irish pub in Frankfurt, Germany. It was one of those moments when you see someone across the room — a light goes off, and an inexorable sequence of events starts to unfold.”
“I was just swept away; despite the fact that we had no common language, and our communication was based on meticulous work with a dictionary, we got married one year later, and that experience was part of our inspiration to start Welocalize.”
“So, you see, our love for each other, care for languages, and an insatiable curiosity about different cultures (which we both share) all became the seeds for Welocalize to grow and thrive. Now, here we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Welocalize.”

2. AI Award to Manage a Modern Problem
Diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) have been important topics this year for many brands, including us.
In June, Welocalize won the 2022 American Best in Business Awards’ Silver Globee for our AI-enabled solution that detects harmful, multilingual content. The solution leverages deep learning neural models in 60+ languages to monitor, identify, rate, and remove offensive multilingual content. Click here to learn more.

3. First Virtual-Site ISO Certification
Welocalize became one of the first language service providers (LSPs) to successfully implement a new ISO virtual-site certification model, which certifies cloud-based quality processes and systems instead of locations.
Welocalize has been ISO 9001 certified for 14 years, and we have now achieved our first virtual-site certification for ISO 9001 and ISO 13485.

4. The Launch of the Welocalize Podcast
This year, we launched ourselves into the world of audio, by kickstarting the new Welocalize Podcast.
To open the podcast, we could think of no one else more suitable to feature as our guest speaker than Smith Yewell himself.
In the premiere episode, Smith chats with our resident podcast host, Louise Law about the importance of relationships, and takes a closer look at the successes and failures he’s experienced since founding Welocalize with his wife, Julia.

5. Introducing PATHFINDER e-magazine
Earlier this year, we released the first edition of PATHFINDER – our brand-new e-magazine filled with great articles and insights on all things multilingual. Plus, some fun news and culture from our Welocalize family.
Topics covered in the premier edition included the evolution of languages across generations, managing global IP in the metaverse, and the importance of cultural sensitivity in advertising.
Huge thanks go to the global marketing and creative team for creating this incredible and insightful magazine.

6. The Return of In-Person LocWorld
In-person industry events made a comeback in 2022 and the first one we attended LocWorld47 Berlin did not disappoint! Read all about it in this special highlights blog from Welocalize Customer Success Director, Steve Maule.
Next up was LocWorld48 in Silicon Valley and we were delighted to be there and connect with industry friends and partners alike. To celebrate our 25 anniversary and our new brand era of boldness, curiosity, and authenticity, we had those very words printed on special Welocalize branded t-shirts for visitors to our booth at LocWorld48. We also celebrated ‘25 Years Round the Sun’ at a special dinner and welcomed friends and colleagues.LocWorldSlideshow
It has truly been a year of great change here at Welocalize and one with so many highlights. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much without the help of our incredible teams all around the world. So, a big thank you goes to everyone at Welocalize for making our 25th anniversary one to celebrate.
We look forward to another 25 years of being bold, curious, and authentic. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.
