May 7, 2013 – Frederick, Maryland, USA – At the end of 2012, the Welocalize team in Japan was busy clearing out a storage room and came across many old computers and monitors that were left collecting dust. They decided to contact Class for Everyone, a non-profit organization based in Tokyo, Japan, that recycles personal computers (PCs) and distributes them to schools in the developing world.
“We are a non-profit organization that aims to redress the information gap in the world and to make equal opportunities in the developing countries by using the Internet.” Mr. Koji Takahama, CEO of Class for Everyone commented. “We are gathering a lot of computer from companies in Japan, like Welocalize, and sending them to schools in the Asian African developing countries to promote information and technology education. We are aiming to recycle over 1,000 laptops this year.”
Baiz Yeh, Localization Engineer at Welocalize in Japan said, “The Welocalize team at the Tokyo office were motivated and behind this initiative. We don’t use the equipment anymore so someone needed to get the benefits. Class for Everyone totally refurbishes the PCs with up-to-date software. This means nothing gets wasted and that children will be able to learn and make the most of the recycled PCs.”
Giving back is something very important to welocalize. In the past few months, they have donated over $8,000 to Kiva for their 2012 holiday campaign and built 12 bicycles for underprivileged children at a company meeting. The company is definitely ‘doing things differently’ and to Smith Yewell, CEO of Welocalize, making a difference in the world is equally important.
