Welocalize translates more than 1.2 billion words a year, which is 100 million words a month, that’s 3.3 million words per day on average.
Smith and members of the exec team visit Welocalize offices each year as part of the “Roadshow” initiative.
Smith received the Bronze Star for service in Operation Desert Storm.
Welocalize filled request for 400+ language pairs in 2016 for some of the worlds largest global brands and translated over 175 languages.
Smith is also in the TAUS HAUS band, entertaining colleagues at TAUS events.
Smith Yewell is actively involved and serves on the advisory boards of the Rosetta Foundation, the Aslan Foundation and Color Me A Cure Foundation.
In 2015, Welocalize celebrated their 11th year of being on the Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies list.
Prior to co-founding Welocalize, Julia started her own company in Riga, Latvia, manufacturing and selling leather accessories.
Welocalize was started in the basement of Smith and Julia Yewell’s home.
Smith is lead guitarist in a band called Fuzzy Match which formed at a company Christmas party.
The “O” in the Welocalize logo, represents the art and science of language. The tilde symbol represents science and the brushstroke rendering of the “O” represents art. Together, the logo’s intended meaning is that effective communication is both art and science.
In 2016, Welocalize was named the 7th largest language services provider in the world by Common Sense Advisory.

Smith and Julia met in Frankfurt, Germany when Smith was seving in the US army. They met in an Irish pub and shared no common language.
