Lauren Southers took part in Welocalize’s Intern Program as part of her post-graduate studies at the University of Chester in the UK. She successfully completed her Business Masters in September 2013 and then joined Welocalize’s Global Marketing Team as a full-time employee. Lauren’s success continues as she recently won the prestigious award for Most Outstanding Graduate from the Chester Business Club.
Welocalize is delighted and proud of Lauren’s award. We spoke to Lauren just after she received her award on May 8, 2014, at an awards ceremony held at the University of Chester UK campus.
You won! Fantastic News. How did you find out?
My course organizer at Chester University, Lisa Rowe, sent me an email informing me that I had been nominated and won the award.
What was the awards ceremony like?
The ceremony was very intimate, a smaller group of people there. I have never been one for the spotlight and tend to shy away; however, it was nice to have recognition to how hard I had worked and what I had achieved. I’m happy that I was able to share that with my mentor, Lynne McKie, in work, the team at the University and my parents.
Why do you think you won?
I think it was all the hard work and effort I put into the course and having a great team of people around me, my mentor Lynne who supported and guided me through the two 20-week placements, my parents who supported me with my daughter and all the people in Welocalize passing on their years of knowledge. I knew what I wanted from the course and I was determined to successfully complete the year.
What tips do you have for other students and graduates?
Passion! Do something that you are passionate about, if you don’t love what you do then you’re not going to put 100% in to it and that will show somewhere down the line.
Prioritize. The Business Masters was a full on compact year and I had to learn that I could not say yes to everything. I spent many Saturday nights with a laptop on my knee and reading about business methodologies.
Goals. It’s important to have something that you can work towards otherwise you can lose sight of what you are working towards.
How will you be celebrating?
After this year, I think sleeping is a good idea. I will be spending time with my family and then look at what I can do next to help me progress.
As well as pursuing a full-time career at Welocalize, Lauren is also involved in raising awareness of internship and placement opportunities at Welocalize to business and language students at the University of Chester.
