Interview with Lauren Southers and Reported by Louise Law
It’s no secret that it’s a challenging economic climate out there, not just for businesses but also for young people just starting out on their careers. Welocalize works with the University of Chester in the UK, offering placements to graduates as part of the Chester Business Masters course.
Chester graduate, Lauren Southers, recently completed her placement at Welocalize. She has now gained permanent employment at Welocalize, as a full-time member of the Global Marketing and Sales Support Team.
How did you start out with your education?
“I didn’t take the conventional route with my education. In fact, like many others, I fell into the middle group at high school – neither outstanding nor under-performing. When I left school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and who does at 18. What I did know was that I had a lot of passion and drive to do well and have a successful career. In 2009, I was accepted on to a BA Business Management Degree at John Moores University in Liverpool. After 3 years of juggling university, work and my daughter, I achieved a 2:1 BA Hons.”
After University, what did you do next?
“I spent the summer deliberating what path I should take. I applied for graduate schemes, answered job advertisements but also considered a Masters degree. In my search I came across the Chester Business Masters, run by the University of Chester. I prefer to learn hands-on so this course sounded like the perfect mixture of academic and practical learning. I could gain professional experience whilst earning my Masters Degree. Having a Masters degree gives you some competitive edge but to undertake ‘real-life’ professional projects at the same time, really makes your CV stand out from the pile.”
It is very tough to find a good job after graduating?
“It is incredibly tough out there for graduates, so much competition. After Uni, 3 years of hard work and financial investment, to go up against 100 other people 1 job is pretty daunting! From the group of friends I had at university, I’d say that one out of 10 has a job related to their degree. Most are getting by with part time jobs or jobs that they took simply to pay the bills.”
You spent 2 x 20 week placements, working on the Marketing and Global Sales Support Team at Welocalize. What did you like about your placement?
“Working with a group of really talented people who were always happy to help and pass on their knowledge and expertise. Simply having exposure and experience in the real business world motivates you and everything you learn academically makes sense. I attended meetings overseas and New York was the best! I worked with a lot of people, all over the world.”
Welocalize offered you a full-time position after you completed your Masters. Why do you think they gave you the job?
“I worked hard and put the hours in. As Benjamin Franklin once said or was it Richard Branson, ‘The harder I work, the luckier I get…’ I was also enthusiastic and keen to learn more about the company.”
Are you enjoying being a permanent employee?
“Yes. Welocalize is a truly amazing place to work, I am extremely fortunate to have gained employment here. There is never a dull moment and the weeks fly by. Each week is different and I am always learning something new. What I love most about my job is the people I work with. They are passionate about what they do and all work as a team.”
Two more Chester Business Masters graduates have recently started their placement at Welocalize’s UK Headquarters in Cheshire. An article about the Welocalize program with the University of Chester was published in October, 2013.
