welocalize begins first phase of open source development
Welocalize commits to transition underlying GlobalSight technology to open source
Frederick, Maryland, USA – July 30, 2008 – Welocalize, Inc., a leading provider of integrated globalization services, begins the first phase of open source development on the GlobalSight Ambassador product, an industry-leading Translation Management System (TMS). In order to release the source code to the public, there is a need to re-architect the underlying technology. This involves replacing several third-party software components with open source equivalents for the following functions: Workflow, Database, Object Relationship Mapping, Middleware and Directory Management.
“We have seen an incredible response to the GlobalSight Open Source Initiative from clients and service providers in our industry over the last few weeks,” explains Smith Yewell, CEO of Welocalize. “At the top of everyone’s mind is a lasting commitment to vendor independence and, of course, access to the Ambassador source repository. We are working very hard to make both happen.”
Welocalize developers have begun the migration of all commercially-developed technology components to open source equivalents, including Hibernate, JBoss, JBoss jBPM, MySQL and Open LDAP.
“The migration will take between 3-4 months, and a firm open source roadmap will be posted on www.globalsight.com in the coming weeks,” says Gary Prioste, Vice President of Technology Solutions for Welocalize. “This is a crucial element in committing the GlobalSight Ambassador product to open source. After we convert to a veritable open platform, the source code for Ambassador will be available for download, along with accompanying product specifications and deployment requirements.”
GlobalSight is a collaborative, open source initiative to develop a flexible and sustainable Translation Management System (TMS) that leverages the best ideas and addresses the true needs of the industry. In this non-captive community, participants are free to discuss, discover and build upon a translation process automation tool that provides choice and flexibility—and can be shared by all.
